Why Custom Design still beats A.I.

AI-generated artwork is everywhere right now. It can create images in seconds, imitate almost any style, and produce endless variations with very little effort. For breweries looking to release a new beer quickly, it might seem like an easy solution.
But when it comes to packaging, easy isn't always better.
The reality is that your beer label isn't just artwork—it's part of your brand. It's often the first thing a customer sees before they ever taste what's inside the can. In a crowded taproom cooler or retail shelf, that label is responsible for grabbing attention, communicating personality, and helping someone remember your brewery long after they've finished the beer.
That's where custom illustration has an advantage.

When I create artwork for a brewery, I'm not just making an image. I'm learning about the beer, the story behind it, the audience it's intended for, and how it fits into the brewery's overall identity. Every design decision is intentional. The illustration is built specifically for that product and that brand.
AI doesn't work that way.
AI generates images by pulling from patterns it learned from existing artwork. While the results can be impressive, the process isn't based on understanding your brewery, your customers, or your goals. It creates images that look good on the surface, but often lack the personality and thoughtfulness that make a label truly memorable.
There's also the issue of originality.
Craft beer has always celebrated creativity. Breweries spend countless hours developing recipes, refining ingredients, and creating products that feel unique. The artwork should reflect that same level of care. Custom illustration gives your brewery something that belongs to you—not a variation of something a computer assembled from millions of images.
There are practical considerations too. Current U.S. copyright guidance places limitations on copyright protection for purely AI-generated artwork. While laws continue to evolve, businesses using AI-generated images should understand that ownership and copyright protection may not be as straightforward as artwork created by a human artist. Most importantly, customers can tell when something has personality.
The best beer labels don't just decorate a can—they tell a story. They create a connection. They become part of what people remember about the beer itself. That's difficult to achieve with artwork that was generated in seconds and never had a human hand guiding its creation.
At the end of the day, breweries put incredible care into what goes inside the can. I believe the artwork on the outside deserves the same level of craftsmanship.
Because great beer deserves more than a generated image. It deserves artwork made by someone who cares about the final product just as much as the people brewing it.
